That silver-gray color on an untreated deck or cedar fence isn't dirt — it's the surface layer of the wood itself, broken down by UV and weather, with mildew living in it. Underneath is sound, warm-colored timber.
Wood is where high pressure does the most damage. Push too hard and you don't clean the board, you tear the soft grain out from between the harder growth rings. The result is a furry, splintered surface that looks worse than when you started and will never take stain evenly again. That damage is permanent.
We clean wood at low pressure with the right solution, which lifts the mildew and gray layer while leaving the grain intact.

If you're staining or sealing afterward
Tell us when you book. Prepping wood for stain is a different job from just cleaning it — the surface needs to be free of mildew and old failing finish, and it needs to dry properly before anything goes on it. A deck that gets stained over trapped moisture or leftover mildew will fail within a season, and you'll have paid twice.
We'll get it clean and tell you honestly how long to let it dry before you or your painter comes back.
Composite decking
Composite doesn't rot, but it absolutely grows mould and algae — usually worse than wood in shaded spots, and it shows as black speckling. It cleans up well at low pressure. Never let anyone hit composite with a high-pressure tip; it scars easily and the marks don't weather out.

Will pressure washing ruin my deck?
It can, if it's done with too much pressure — that's what causes the furry, splintered look you sometimes see. We clean wood at low pressure with a cleaning solution doing the work, which lifts mildew and graying without tearing the grain.
Can you clean my deck before I stain it?
Yes, and please tell us that's the plan when you book. Stain prep is a more thorough process than a standard clean, and the wood needs to dry properly before anything goes on it.
How long does the deck need to dry before staining?
Typically 24–48 hours in good weather, longer if it's humid or shaded. We'll give you a realistic estimate for your specific deck rather than a generic number.
Do you clean composite decking?
Yes. Composite grows algae and mould just like wood does. It cleans up well at low pressure — high pressure permanently scars composite, so it needs a careful approach.
